Canucks host Wild in important tilt at GM Place

Vancouver owns a two-point edge on the Wild, which enters the matchup having won three straight games, for the top spot in the competitive Northwest. Calgary is also in the mix for the division crown, trailing the Canucks by just three points heading into this evening's play.

The Canucks have been playing excellent hockey as well as of late. The club is 11-2-1 since February 10 and had a five-game win streak before Sunday's 4-2 defeat at Anaheim.

Brent Sopel and Alexandre Burrows had the goals for Vancouver, which received a rare shaky performance from netminder Roberto Luongo. The All-Star yielded three first-period goals and failed in his bid to notch his 40th victory of the season.

The Canucks have won five in a row as the host and bring a strong 22-9-2 mark at GM Place into this test. Vancouver will be starting up a three-game homestand tonight.

Minnesota begins a three-game road trip, all against Northwest Division foes, this evening. The Wild have built up plenty of momentum coming into the trek and maintained their recent winning ways with Sunday's overtime triumph over Colorado.

Brent Burns netted the game-winner with only 18.9 seconds left in the extra session as the Wild pulled out a 3-2 decision at the Xcel Energy Center. Mikko Koivu scored the other two Minnesota goals, while both Pavol Demitra and Marian Gaborik notched a pair of assists on the afternoon.

The Wild, who will also meet Edmonton and Calgary on this excursion, have not won four in a row since opening this season with a six-game win streak.

Tonight's contest will be the final regular-season meeting between the teams. Minnesota is 4-1-2 against the Canucks in 2006-07. although Vancouver has taken two of the three encounters at General Motors Place this year.

Nine of the last 12 games in this series have been decided by one goal.
