Cameron crusher: UNC surges in second half to beat Duke

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/12/2009 - Durham, NC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ty Lawson led five Tar Heels in double-figures with 25 points, and No. 3 North Carolina used a strong second half surge to top sixth-ranked Duke, 101-87, beating the Blue Devils for the fourth straight year at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Tyler Hansbrough scored 17 points and Danny Green had 15 for the Tar Heels, and the duo accomplished a feat no North Carolina player has achieved in over 20 years. With the victory, Hansbrough and Green have now recorded four wins at Cameron Indoor Stadium, becoming the first UNC players to do that since the team from 1982-1985 won four straight in Durham.

They are only the third class of players to do that, as Wake Forest's Tim Duncan and Rusty LaRue won four straight on Coach K Court from 1994-97.

Lawson also recorded five assists and four rebounds for North Carolina (22-2, 8-2 ACC), which outscored Duke 57-35 in the second half and has now won eight straight conference games after dropping the first two.

With the win, UNC now has sole possession of first place in the ACC, one game clear of Duke and 1 1/2 games ahead of Clemson, Florida State and Virginia Tech.

Deon Thompson provided 12 points, while Wayne Ellington had 15 and seven rebounds for North Carolina, which leads the all-time series, 129-97.

Kyle Singler was the leading scorer for Duke (20-4, 7-3) with 22 points, but the Blue Devils had a putrid second half. Jon Scheyer had 20 points for the Blue Devils, who made just 2-of-15 three-point attempts in the second period. Gerald Henderson provided 17 points in the loss.

Nolan Smith scored 11, while Greg Paulus had eight points for the home team, which has now dropped five of six overall to its arch-rival. The loss is also the first for Duke at Cameron after winning its initial 14 games as the host this season.

Duke held a 52-44 lead at halftime, but on UNC's first possession, Singler was called for a technical foul after elbowing Hansbrough in the face on a loose ball 16 seconds into the period.

Green sank both free throws, and the teams continued to go back-and-forth in the early minutes of the half, with numerous players battling hard for each rebound.

The pace started to pick up, and the Tar Heels were the beneficiaries, tying the game at 58 on a Hansbrough dunk with 15 minutes left.

Singler was the only Blue Devils player who continued his hot shooting from the first half, scoring the team's first nine points of the period, and his three provided an answer to the UNC burst and put Duke back out in front, 61-58.

North Carolina finally regained the lead, 64-63, on Lawson's two free throws with 12 minutes left, and Ellington's three a minute later made it 67-65.

After shooting over 60 percent in the first half, Duke went cold from long distance, missing 10 of its first 11 three-point shots in the second half.

The poor shooting led to a game-changing 14-0 run by North Carolina that put the visitors in total control. Lawson started it with a nifty bank shot and a fast break layup for a 78-71 edge, and Hansbrough drained a desperation three as the shot clock wound down to put the Tar Heels ahead by 12 with six minutes left.

Lawson's acrobatic three-point play with just under four minutes left capped the run, giving UNC a commanding 88-71 advantage.

The Tar Heels were not threatened down the stretch.

North Carolina came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, making its first five shots while taking a 14-6 lead on Hansbrough's dunk just over four minutes into the contest.

Hansbrough had an earlier layup, which moved him into second all-time on the ACC scoring list. With 2,604 career points, he sits behind only Duke's J.J. Redick, who posted 2,769 points in his time with the Blue Devils.

The Tar Heels forced four turnovers in that span, as six of their early points came off Duke miscues. UNC continued to shoot well, as the game took on a very fast pace in the early moments.

The visitors went up by as many as 11 in the early minutes, but Scheyer and Paulus drained back-to-back threes to get Duke to within five with 9 1/2 minutes left in the first half.

Bobby Frasor, who came into the game averaging only 2.4 points per contest, hit three early three-pointers for North Carolina, with the third giving him a season-high in points (nine) and the Tar Heels a 34-26 lead with eight minutes left.

But Hansbrough committed two straight fouls just before Frasor's three, forcing him out of the game for the rest of the half. Duke took advantage, scoring 14 consecutive points to take the lead. Singler began the burst with a three, and his jumper with five minutes to go put the Blue Devils ahead, 40-34.

UNC closed to within 42-40 on two Ed Davis free throws, but Duke finished the half on a 10-4 run. Henderson and Singler drained back-to-back threes, and Lance Thomas' layup with 1.8 seconds on the clock capped the burst.

Despite North Carolina's early shooting success, it was the Blue Devils who shot 61.8 percent from the field in the first half, including 6-for-9 from three-point range, to take the 52-44 halftime lead.

Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds

Super Bowl XLIII, the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Super Bowl XLIII is now set, the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers will meet each other on February 1st in Tampa's Raymond James Stadium to battle it out for the coveted Lombardi Trophy. The game kicks off at 6:00pm ET on NBC with announcers Al Michaels and John Madden covering the on-field action. Super Bowl XLIII betting odds at online bookmaker MySportsbook.com have the Steelers listed as an early -6.5 against the spread favorite.Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. The Steelers jumped on Baltimore early, building a 13-0 first half lead, and never let up on their way to a fairly easy win. Although the Ravens did close to within two points in the fourth quarter, it never appeared as if they had enough offense to pull off the upset.

The Steelers dominating defense held Baltimore to a total of 198 yards while allowing them to convert just three third downs in 13 attempts. Pittsburgh also forced quarterback Joe Flacco into three interceptions, one of which safety Troy Polamalu returned fourty yards for a touchdown.

The Cardinals, by far the playoff team with the longest odds to reach Super Bowl XLIII, did so yesterday with a 32-25 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.

Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.

MySportsbook.com's Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds:

Pittsburgh Steelers -6.5 (-110), Over 46.5 (-110), -260 (Money line)

Arizona Cardinals +6.5 (-110), Under 46.5 (-110), +220 (Money line)

Matt Foust won both of his conference championship plays yesterday and he is ready to serve up plenty of Super Bowl action. Each individual play costs $15.00, however, MySportsbook.com recommends purchasing Matt's NFL Playoff Package which includes all of Matt's Super Bowl props and picks from just $45.00.
